Exhaust smell inside the car is a safety problem

If you smell exhaust in the cabin, take it seriously. Carbon monoxide has no smell of its own, but it travels with exhaust gases you can smell, and a leak under the car can let it in through the floor or the trunk seals. Open the windows, keep the trip short and call us at (952) 432-2112. A headache, dizziness or drowsiness while driving is a reason to pull over and get out.

And never warm up a car in a closed garage, not even for a few minutes on a below-zero morning.

Signs you need exhaust and muffler repair in Apple Valley, MN

Road salt and rust

The exhaust runs under the car, heats up, cools down and gets sprayed with salty slush all winter. That rusts pipes, mufflers, clamps and hangers from the outside. Short trips rust them from the inside: water is a normal byproduct of burning fuel, and when the system never gets hot enough to dry out, it collects in the muffler and sits there.

Rust makes the work harder too. Bolts and flange studs that have been through a dozen salt seasons often snap instead of turning. That is one reason we look closely before giving you an estimate, and why we call you first if a job grows once we are into it.

A rattle is not always a new muffler

That buzzing rattle at idle is very often a loose heat shield, the thin metal plate that keeps exhaust heat away from the floor and the fuel tank. A broken hanger can let the pipe knock against the frame. Those are small fixes. When a pipe or muffler is rusted through, we replace the damaged section rather than the whole system, unless the rest is in the same shape. We show you what we found and tell you what is urgent and what can wait.

Not every noise under the car is the exhaust. A clunk that only happens over bumps is more often a worn sway bar link or control arm bushing, which our suspension repair page covers.

Catalytic converter codes and the check engine light

The catalytic converter cleans up exhaust gases, and oxygen sensors before and after it watch how well it is working. A code like P0420 means the engine computer thinks the converter has fallen behind. That code does not always mean the converter is bad. An exhaust leak ahead of a sensor, a lazy oxygen sensor or an engine misfire can set it, and a misfire left alone can ruin a brand-new converter.

So we run engine diagnostics first, and you are not buying an expensive part that leaves the light on. If the root cause is worn plugs or a failing coil, our tune-up page explains that side of it.

Questions about exhaust and muffler repair

Can I keep driving with a loud exhaust?

The noise itself is mostly a nuisance, but the leak behind it can let fumes into the car, and a leak ahead of the oxygen sensors can turn on the check engine light. If you smell exhaust inside, call or request an appointment right away.

What is rattling under my car?

Most often it is a loose or rusted heat shield or a broken exhaust hanger. Both are easy to spot once the car is up on a lift.

Why did an exhaust problem turn on my check engine light?

The oxygen sensors read the exhaust stream, so a leak or a weak catalytic converter changes what they see. The computer stores a code, and our diagnostic scan tablet reads it to point us toward the cause.
